German War Memorial

At the Pordoi Pass the German war memorial was built in 1959, celebrating the German-Austrian war dead soldiers during the Great War.  It houses the corpses of 454 German soldiers and 8128 and also 849 ones dead during Second World War belonging to the Wehrmacht army.
The ossuary is managed by the Austrian Black Cross and taken care by the Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfűrsorge.
The architectural structure calls to mind the typical German Totenburg, that are the "dead fortresses" : it has a round shape (54 m. of diameter) and divided into three floors. In the external part, the lowest one, there are graves dating back to the Second World War ;  in the internal octagonal floors there were found other soldiers. At the entrance, leaning against the wall, there is the name list with all the names of soldiers, a votive lamp and some statues of soldiers, suffering because of their brothers in arms.
The particularity of this sacrary are the soldiers belonging to both the World Wars ; this because at the end of years '30 the Hitler Reich decided to build several sacral spaces for the German soldiers dead in Italy, that couldn't be completed because of the outbreak of war.
For this reason the works resumed  during the years '50, including also the Wehrmacht soldiers who were in Italy during the period of Mussolinian Social Republic of Salò.
