The skies over the Dolomites are preparing to offer an unmissable astronomical event:
on August 12, 2026, it will be possible to observe from Arabba, and generally throughout the Fodom valley,
a partial solar eclipse, a rare phenomenon in which the Moon will pass in front of the Sun right during sunset hours.
The event, announced by experts from the National Institute of Astrophysics (INAF), will be one of the most anticipated astronomical moments of summer 2026: the eclipse will be visible from Italy in partial form, with the solar disk progressively obscured by the passage of the Moon.
At Arabba Fodom Dolomites, the ideal place to observe the solar eclipse on August 12, 2026 is from one of the surrounding peaks with an unobstructed view towards the northwest.
We recommend:
Passo Pordoi, with a short hike along trail no:601.

Eclipse begins: 7:25 PM
Maximum eclipse: 8:18 PM
Sunset: 8:22 PM, before the eclipse has ended.
The moment of maximum coverage will therefore be the most interesting for observers: the Moon will have reached the ideal position to create a distinctive atmosphere of dimmed light, with the Sun starring in a truly extraordinary sunset.
To make the most of the eclipse, it will be important to choose a spot with a clear view toward the sunset Sun, avoiding natural or man-made obstacles that could limit visibility. Experts also remind that observing the Sun must be done exclusively with certified eye-protection devices: ordinary sunglasses are not sufficient.
